This web app is a mash-up of Kijiji, e transfer (without using money) and Facebook/Instagram/Telegram/WhatsApp or any other social network. There’s nothing else like it on the market.

What do we mean?

How it’s like Kijiji: On the web app you will be able to offer up products or services that you want to sell onto the platform, just like you do on Kijiji or Marketplace and you will be able to look for products or services that you want as well..so you can barter ‘til the cows come home…but it gets better…

How it’s like e-transfer: Instead of using cash/money, you will use BITS™ points to get whatever products or services you want off the platform - NO MONEY NEEDED…. and it gets better…

How it’s like Facebook/Telegram/WhatsApp: You will be able to find people near you to barter with AND to message/connect with. You can find your peeps in your own town! Can you have both?
Yep! You can totally have more than one account — you just need to sign up with a different email for each one.

• Also want to offer your business services? Set up a business account too.

Each one will have its own offers and own BITS™ wallet, so they stay nice and separate.

Don’t want to keep them separate?
No problem! If it’s easier for you to mix business and personal in one place, just stick with a personal account and run everything through that one. All your offers and BITS™ will live in one wallet.

NO! We fundamentally, and we mean FUNDAMENTALLY, believe in your privacy and freedom, so you can set up your public-facing profile however you like.

If you want to put your real name on your public profile, that’s fine, but you can also create a username like ‘hockeymom’ or ‘fishfanatic’ or ‘jennylovesdogs’...we don’t care.

So when you send 50 BITS™ to a guy named Bob for mowing your lawn (just work with us here - pretend for now that some guy named Bob mows your lawn!), all Bob will see is that ‘hockeymom’ (for example) sent him 50 BITS™. You don’t even have to say it was for lawn-mowing. We don’t care. If, however, you want to know in the future that you sent Bob 50 BITS™ for mowing your lawn, you might want to put ‘lawn-mowing services’ in the description when you’re sending the BITS™ to Bob’s wallet.

As you probably know, we have intentionally not created an app that you have to download from Apple or Google play stores because, as you can imagine, it’s very important for us to be able to update in real time and not have to ask permission for the app to exist.

It’s very easy to add the web-app to your home screen. And it will behave like an app. Here’s a quick walkthrough video. Click here.

Here are step-by-step instructions:

1. Go to your web browser on your phone and type app.barterit.ca

2. When the website pops up, go to the very bottom of your screen and click the box with the ‘up’ arrow (its the icon you use when you want to text or share a link with someone)

3. Several options will pop up like text, email etc but scroll down on the pop up until you see the words “Add to Home Screen”. Click on it.

4. On this screen it will prompt you to give it a title. Type ‘Barter It® App or just Barter It®’. Then click ‘Add’.

5. You will see that it’s been added to your home screen! That’s it.

BITS™ Explained
BITS™ are simply points you use to ‘pay’ for items or services you want.

They’re sent from person to person through a digital wallet on the web app. BITS™ stands for “Barter Its” 😀 — kind of like Canadian Tire money, if you’ve ever used that. Same idea.

To keep it simple: sending BITS™ works a lot like an e-transfer.
Let’s say Bob cuts your lawn and charges 50 BITS™ — you just send 50 BITS™ from your wallet to his. You’ll both get a confirmation, and that’s it. Quick and easy.

Note: You don’t have to write anything in the description if you don’t want to — just like an e-transfer. If you do want to say something like “lawn mowing,” go for it, but it’s totally optional.

Whatever a loaf of bread is generally worth at the store down the road, that’s what the value should be in BITS™. This makes it a very straightforward way to barter with others. You’ll find the Chat button either right on the offer you’re viewing or in the navigation bar on your screen.

A great way to begin is with something simple like:
“Hey! I see you’re offering _______.” (Fill in the blank.)

Then just ask any questions you need answered. Easy!

Pro tip: You don’t have to do a direct barter with anyone. You can simply offer BITS™ as payment. Of course, if you both love what the other is offering, feel free to do a good old-fashioned trade. Totally up to you!

How Do I Pay?

So you’ve been chatting with another member about one of their offers, and you want the item or service. Now what?

For quick step-by-step instructions, we created a video here. Think e-transfer, and you’ve basically figured out how it works!

Here are the steps written out:

Step 1: Go to the homepage on the web-app. You’ll see ‘Send BITS™’ right at the top. (or click on the wallet icon and you’ll see it there too)

Step 2: Now type in the person’s name or username into the field.

Some suggestions should pop up as to who it is.

Step 3: Enter the BITS™ amount you want to send.

Step 4: (Optional) Add a short description of the item or service.

Step 5: Create a security question and answer.

Step 6: Click ‘Send BITS™’ and then it will prompt you to enter your PIN Number you created when you signed up and created your account.

Step 7: That’s it!

Now you’ll see in your wallet that the ‘transaction’ is pending until the other member accepts the BITS™.

Wow! So exciting! You did it! Let’s go!

Step 1: If you are the seller and another member is sending you BITS™, you will receive an email notification as well as another notification in the web-app showing that someone is sending you BITS™ and needs you to accept them.

Step 3: Type in the answer to the security question and click ‘Accept’

And that’s it! When you go to your wallet, your balance should reflect the new BITS™ amount!

Now all that’s left for you to do is to go shopping!!

Can regular people AND businesses use Barter It™?

Totally. Barter It™ is for everyone — whether you're just an everyday person looking to trade a few things, or you run a full-on business.

That’s why you can set up two types of accounts:

• A personal account (for your own stuff)

• Or a business account (if you’re running a biz)

Business offers will look a little different from personal ones, so you’ll always know when you're trading with a business versus a regular member. Super handy when you're spending your BITS™.

Now here's the cool part:
We really encourage everyone to support the businesses on the platform as much as possible. Even if a business doesn’t have everything listed for barter, they probably offer tons of other great stuff for regular cash.

So if you see something you love but it’s not up for BITS™, no problem — go ahead and support them with dollars. These are your people — like-minded business owners who are part of this awesome community. Let’s keep it local and lift each other up!

How to find businesses on the app:

• Go to your profile menu and click "Explore Businesses"

• Or use the filters in the search bar (on the left side of the screen) and select "Businesses" — then you’ll only see business accounts

1) The Map - we created a map where every business is tagged, so you can see every business across Canada, and click on whichever one you want, in whichever city you want!

Tap the heart icon on the offer you like to add to your ‘Favourites’.

Once you've ‘favourited’ (cool word, eh?) an item, you’ll be able to find it right away once you’re ready.

You can see all your favourited items by clicking on your Profile Icon > Favourites.

It’s simple! No matter where you are - whether on desktop, tablet or mobile devices, you will always be able to see a magnifying glass icon somewhere on the screen. Just tap on that and away you go! You will then be able to type in any key word you want to narrow down your search..

Shipping costs will most likely always be in cash, because the seller will have to pay a company to ship a product to you.

Ratings and reviews are crucial to keep the system clean, and to make sure everyone ‘plays nicely in the sandbox’.

It’s a way to help people work with each other, respect each other and if a member consistently is kind and looks after others, they receive more barter deals!

If, however, a member consistently chooses to frustrate others, not deliver, etc, they will get fewer barter deals.

No. If you receive a not-so-great review, it will be important to take it seriously because reviews are the primary feature we created to make sure the community works well and it helps people determine who they want to barter with.

If you quickly respond to a not-great review, your comment is public and it demonstrates to other members that you like to resolve issues quickly and are great to work with.

Remember, our amazing community is made up of incredible people who are passionate about being mature adults who solve problems together, not the culture around us where we all go crying to ‘daddy government’ or other entities to solve problems we should be handling ourselves.

So lets prove to ourselves we have what it takes to grow up and govern ourselves! Because we really can!

The app will operate much like e transfer where once both members, the buyer and the seller, agree to the refund amount, the BITS™ can be sent back to the original buyer.

So, the seller, who originally received the BITS™, simply sends the BITS™ back to the original buyer. This is a matter that will be resolved by the two parties involved in the original transaction.

Absolutely! Have at it!

Direct barter is the best way to barter because that means that both you and the person you are bartering with each have what the other person wants at the same time and at the same value. That’s almost like winning the lottery.

But for all those other times that you want lawn mowing services from Bob, but he doesn’t want your eggs (for example), just send Bob some BITS™ and call it a day.

Now you don’t have to worry about who owes what. Bob will now be able to use those BITS™ to get something else like a new shirt, or piano lessons for his kid, or save up BITS™ and get a watch he likes…the possibilities for Bob (and you) are endless.

Go to the offer you want to delete and click on Edit and scroll to ‘Delete’ and follow the prompts.

It’s simply a matter of poking around the web-app and familiarizing yourself with it and before you know it, you’ll be a pro!

If you only want to Hide your offer, simply go to the offer you want to hide, scroll to ‘Pause’ at the bottom of the offer and it will will remove the offer from the public, but it will be all ready for you to post it again at a later date. All the details will be held for you.

2) Offer a deal if the product or service has been sitting live in your offers and you aren’t getting enough bites - mix it up, make it more attractive, get creative, put ‘REDUCED’ in the title or ‘SALE’.

3) Start chatting with other members in your region, the local peeps around you and start talking about what you do, be active in the chat and join or create groups in the chat so you’re interacting with people who might want what you have.

Boring titles don’t catch eyes. Switch it up! Use fun, catchy, or creative words — think about what you’d click on if you were scrolling.
Instead of “Lawn Mowing,” try “Lawn Looking Wild? I’ll Tame It — Fast & Affordable!”

2. Refresh your offer if it’s not getting bites
If something’s been sitting there with no interest, shake it up a bit.

• Try a new title

• Tweak the description

• Offer a deal

• Add “REDUCED” or “ON SALE” to the title to catch more eyes
  Don’t be afraid to get creative!

3. Get involved in the community
Start chatting with other members in your area. Let people know what you’re offering!
Join local groups, start conversations, and talk about what you do. People can’t barter with you if they don’t know what you’ve got!

And don’t forget your photos...
Take a minute to review the pictures on your listing. Ask yourself:
Would I click on this if I saw it while scrolling?
If the answer is no, it might be time to upgrade your pics.
Blurry, dark, or low-quality images = instant scroll-past.
Clear, bright, well-framed images = more clicks and way more BITS™.

Bottom line:
Make it catchy. Keep it clear. Add detail. Use good photos. And don’t be afraid to show a little personality. The more effort you put in, the more attention your offer will get!

Don’t just post the basics — make it eye-catching! Use words you’d stop and click on if you were scrolling.
Ask yourself: What would grab my attention? Then write that. Keep it fun, clear, and a little creative.

2. Mix it up if you're not getting bites
If your offer’s been sitting there with little action, refresh it!

• Add a deal

• Drop the price

• Use attention-grabbing words like “REDUCED” or “SALE” in the title
  Get creative and make it feel like something people don’t want to miss.

3. Be social — start chatting
Connect with members in your area!
Use the chat to:

• Talk about what you offer

• Join local groups

• Create your own group
  The more you connect, the more likely people are to check out your offers.

4. Check your photos — seriously
Take a look at your listing photos. Be honest: Would you stop and click?
If your images are dark, blurry, or not showing off your item or service well — fix that ASAP.
Bright, clear photos + a great description = way more interest.

When you are creating your offer, you will be prompted to add photos or videos - up to 25 - to your offer.

A pop up will give you a list of options - to upload from your camera, photo library, computer etc. Just pick what you want and they will be added to the offer.

You can drag the photos and videos around on the web-app to pick which one you want to be the feature photo/video and put them in any order you think will work best.

Find the offer you want to delete and press ‘Edit’ and follow the prompts to delete.

OR maybe you don’t want to delete the offer because you may want to activate it and make it live at some point in the future, so you can hide or pause your offer.

Click the option to pause the offer and it will move to ‘My Paused Offers’.

There are 3 options -Active, Drafts and Paused Offers. You can organize your offers so that they aren’t lost forever and can be accessed at a later date.

However, when it comes to cars and vehicles, there is an option in the listing/offer to put a cash amount along with a BITS™ amount - so you can ask for a cash/barter blend for a vehicle, mainly because they are pricier items.

Ultimately, it comes down to whatever deal you and another member want to make. But again, the more you use the platform the way it’s intended, the better it is for everyone.

A Note on Community Conduct (a.k.a. Being a Good Human)

We love you guys — truly. That’s why we expect everyone using Barter It™ to follow our Community Code of Conduct at all times. This platform is built on trust, respect, and shared values — and we want to keep it that way.

We encourage everyone to work out disagreements like respectful adults. Have a convo. Be kind. Speak truth without turning it into a brawl. Because let’s be honest — we’re not here to go running to “Daddy Government” or any other authority figure every time something goes sideways. That model? Yeah, it hasn’t exactly worked out great for anyone. So around here, we do things differently.

We have been raised in a society that relies on ‘daddy’ government and ‘daddy’ police to resolve conflict and, for some reason, very few people find that absurd, yet it is! It created the chaos that we have been witnessing for many years.

TL;DR: Adulting is cool. And expected. 😎

Also: reviews matter.
The app has real-time ratings and reviews.
Sellers rate buyers. Buyers rate sellers.
Bad behavior = bad reviews = fewer people wanting to trade with you. It’s that simple.

Quick Conflict Resolution Guidelines

Let’s break it down to help keep things fair and drama-free.

Sellers

• You have the right to ignore or refuse rude, abusive, or unreasonable requests.

• You’re expected to post clear photos and honest descriptions of what you’re offering.

• If someone’s being a jerk, leave a disapproval rating or report them — we’ve got your back.

You are expected to offer a refund if:

• You cancel after receiving BITS™.

• The item isn’t delivered or handed over.

• The item is more than 24 hours late without agreement.

• What you gave isn’t what was described.

• You get paid and don’t deliver, and the buyer backs out.

• The item is faulty, damaged, or broken and you didn’t say so.

• The item gets damaged or lost during delivery.

Buyers

• You can also refuse rude or unreasonable requests.

• Only message sellers if you’re seriously interested — don’t waste their time.

• If something goes wrong, and it fits the refund rules above, you can ask for a refund.

• Rude behavior or canceling last-minute? Not a great look.

Barter It™’s Role

We’re here to facilitate, not babysit.

This community is about honour, personal responsibility, and common sense. We trust you to work it out like grown-ups — and we’ll step in only if it really comes to that.

But be warned:
If you’re not making a genuine effort to resolve an issue and you start creating chaos, you risk:

• Bad reviews

• Less trust from other members

• Suspension or limited access

And yes — inappropriate behaviour or language will get you booted. We’re building something meaningful here. Let’s protect it.

Barter It™ is a unique and special community. We believe that everyone needs to care for each other, lift each other up and act like real adults in a world that does not foster healthy conflict resolution, mutual respect and love for one another.

Our passion is to build a tribe of people who love freedom, who take responsibility for themselves and their actions, and who want to pass these incredible values onto the next generation. We are also passionate about free speech and freedom of expression.

So here’s some healthy, kind, caring adult things to do!

Respect each other. If you’re nice to someone, they’ll most likely be nice to you.

Be kind and courteous. Treat others how you would like to be treated. The ‘Golden Rule’....

Be responsive. If you're not interested in bartering anymore, let the other person know.

Be punctual. If you set up a time to meet with someone, make sure to be on time.

Keep the other person updated. Think you’re going to be a little late or something’s come up? Let them know.

Chat with other members during the day and avoid messaging late at night or early in the morning. No 10pm texting!

Try to meet up in person instead of relying on delivery. Why? This one is important for meeting people face-to-face and finding your peeps in your own towns and cities! Make it a big deal!

When Buying

Only make an offer to a Seller if you have a genuine interest in bartering with them.

Before asking questions to the Seller, make sure to read the item description. We all hate the fire hose of questions that people ask when if they had slowed down and read everything, they would have all the answers!

Be reasonable with your requests..

When organizing a ‘meet-up’, try to meet closer to the Seller.

When Selling

Upload photos you’ve personally taken.

Make sure the photos and words you use are kind to others and they do not exploit others by showing inappropriate parts of the body or talking about sexually inappropriate acts or parts of the body, especially pertaining to children and minors. Images or words showing or talking about drug use are not appropriate.

Write clear and accurate product descriptions in simple English.

Make sure your item is clean before passing it on. Yuck. You’d think this was self-explanatory but hey….

If you agree to sell an item to another member, try to deactivate or archive your offer/listing quickly, unless of course you have multiple items and have more to sell.

Even if you get more inquiries to buy an item, sell the item to the buyer who was the first to reserve it.

Keep the pricing on your products and services fair. No silly price-gouging and other frustrating antics. Remember, you want a fair deal and good pricing when you buy! It all goes back to the ‘Golden Rule’ your grandma drilled into you.

Disabled Offers (when Barter It™ Admin Team disables member offers):

There may be a variety of reasons why an offer is disabled. This may include violations of the Community Code of Conduct as outlined above.

This community upholds free speech and expression. However, there may be images, verbiage, products or services that are reported by the community that the admin has to consider to continue to create the community we all want - freedom of speech, expression, kindness, building each other up, and ultimately ‘adulting’ (taking responsibility for ourselves and our actions), and fulfilling the Golden Rule - do to others have you would have them do to you. For example, don’t like when someone assumes the worst about you? Then give others the benefit of the doubt too.

If you don’t want another member to chat with you or have access to you for whatever reason, you can go to the chat and click on their name (assuming you’ve chatted before).

STEP 1: Click on the little ‘i’ to the right of their name.

STEP 2: Click on ‘Members’

STEP 3: Click on the person’s name and then 3 dots will show beside their name.

STEP 4: Now click on the 3 dots and click BAN.

The way the chat works is… you and that person are on a chat Channel together and you can mute, ban, invite other users to join both of you, freeze the channel, leave the channel altogether. There are lots of options in the chat feature.

No longer wish to use the current email address you were using when you signed up? You now want to change it and are looking for instructions? Well look no further! Below are step-by-step instructions but if you’d prefer watching a video so you can see exactly what to do, just click here and it will take you right to it!

Step-By-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Log In and Find Your Profile. First, head to the Barter It web app and log in with your current email and password. Once you're signed in, look for your profile picture in the menu bar and click on it. A menu will drop down. Click ‘My Profile’.

Step 2: Change Your Email Address. On your profile page, find and click on ‘Edit Contact Information’. Next, you'll see a button labeled Change Email. Click this to bring up the field for your new email address.

Step 3: Enter and Confirm Your New Email. Now, simply input the new email you want to use for your account. Once you've double-checked that it's correct, press Update.

Step 4: Ok, now to Verify Your Old and New Emails. This next part is very important. To ensure your account is secure, we send two separate emails.

First, go to the inbox of the email you are moving away from. Find the email from Barter It and click the Approve button. This confirms that you authorize the change.

Second, go to the inbox of your new email address. Look for the verification email and click the Verify my Email button. This confirms that you own the new email.

Ok, so just to be clear, the email change will not be complete until you click the link in both emails.

Now to Step 5. You’re almost done! Log In with Your New Email. Once you've verified both addresses, you'll be automatically logged out of your account. To sign back in, simply click the Sign In button and enter your new email address and your password.

That's it! You're all set! You've successfully updated your email address on the web app.

Many members might be skeptical about displaying their exact location. However, they want to connect with others in their own towns and cities.

If you create a business profile on the web-app, it makes sense to show your location, especially if you already display it online.

If you set up a personal account, you can simply add your town/city to enable others to find you but you don’t have to display your exact location. Its up to you what you are comfortable with.

And just so you know — this platform was built with privacy and freedom in mind.

We’re a private, web-based platform, and no outside entities have access to the back end of our system. We take your privacy seriously — because we’re just like you in what we want.

That’s totally up to you and the other person. Just like a regular cash deal, it all comes down to a good old-fashioned conversation between the buyer and seller.

If both of you are cool with a payment plan — awesome! Work out the details and make it happen.

But if the seller wants full payment up front, the buyer’s got a couple of options:

• List something on the app to earn BITS™

• Or buy BITS™ and load them into their wallet right away

At the end of the day, some sellers might prefer to wait for a full-price offer — and that’s totally fair. The key is to communicate and find a setup that works for both sides. That’s what bartering’s all about!

Want to report someone? It’s easy — just scroll to the bottom of the screen in the web app and tap “Report Member.” It’s there with a list of options at the very bottom. Follow the prompts, and you’re good to go.

But wait — before you report someone, please read this first:
It’s really important that you try to work things out directly with the other person first. We’ve all been raised in a system that teaches us to run to outside authorities at the first sign of conflict — but that’s not how we roll here.

True adulting means doing your best to handle things with respect, honesty, and maturity. That’s how this community will grow and thrive.

We created Barter It™ because so many Canadians are ready to step away from top-down control and start building communities that are self-governed, respectful, and grounded in honour.
